TITLE: Rights Management for Digital Music
DATE: Tuesday, February 8, 2000
TIME: 3:30 pm
PLACE: 134 Sieg Hall
HOST: Richard Anderson
ABSTRACT:
Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology allows access to protected
content based on rules associated with the content and rights given to the
users. We describe an architecture of a DRM system and make it concrete in
the context of digital music. We also describe some research problems
motivated by DRM. These problems span many areas including security,
cryptography, language design, business models, automated negotiations,
and large distributed systems. As solutions to these problems get more
sophisticated, e-commerce in general, and digital music distribution in
particular, can move in exciting new directions, away from mimicking
physical goods distribution.
